What is a leader?

“If your actions inspire others to dream more, learn more, do more and become more, you are a leader.”  John Quincy Adams

What do you think of yourself as a leader?

What style of leadership do you use?

What are the most important qualities of a leader?

Everyone is a leader.  Some would argue that you need followers in order to be a leader.  Why is that necessary?

A leader is a person who can influence someone else, that is all a leader really does.  Some leaders do it on a grand scale, with a vision that penetrates the hearts of millions and others lead on a much more subtle scale.

Leadership and what makes a leader are continually being debated with nearly every person having their own opinion of what leadership is.  The qualities of a leader and what character traits are important provide are fodder for lengthy discussions.

The best leader it seems  can create an intention, a powerful vision and step back and let those who embrace the vision take it on and shape it and make it happen.

  1. Coach:

We are currently working on a new leadership curriculum using the following definition from Jerry Hoover:

Influencing others to solve their own problems in an ethical manner.

This is an excellent working definition of leadership. An effective and dynamic leader has learned to integrate organizational roles (those based on policy – the power of position) and team-building roles (those based on relationships – the power of influence).

I love Norman Swartzkopf’s quote that “leadership is a potent combination of character and strategy – but if you must be without one, be without strategy…”

Stay tuned to the Police Dynamics blog. I just got back from an extensive tour in the Holy Land and filmed a bunch of training videos while I was there. I will be posting them over the next several weeks at http://www.policedynamicmedia.com.

  3. Interesting blog which I enjoyed.

I think leaders need first class people skills and I see this on a daily basis – empathy, listening skills and so forth.

    • How often do you find leaders that lack those skills? Often leaders are placed in a “role” of leadership without the necessary skills to be an effective leader. If that person doesn’t seek leadership with a passion (developing him/herself) to truly become a leader then that person isn’t acting as a leader but more like a manager.
