coaching to accelerate careers for women (WSJ)

Coaching is being seen as a way for women who are choosing an executive career path to improve their chances of being included in the succession planning activities for an organization.  

In a recent Atlantic Monthly journal article Hanna Rosin showed that women are starting to gain advantages in the workforce.   Impressive gains have been seen in the industries where women are able to utilize their strengths, networking, leading and forming relationships.

Men have seen the tide turn and in the present economy men have been bearing the brunt of the economic shift.   Hanna Rosin writes, “The men in that room, almost without exception, were casualties of the end of the manufacturing era. Most of them had continued to work with their hands even as demand for manual labor was declining. Since 2000, manufacturing has lost almost 6 million jobs, more than a third of its total workforce, and has taken in few young workers. The housing bubble masked this new reality for a while, creating work in construction and related industries. Many of the men I spoke with had worked as electricians or builders; one had been a successful real-estate agent. Now those jobs are gone too. Henderson spent his days shuttling between unemployment offices and job interviews, wondering what his daughter might be doing at any given moment. In 1950, roughly one in 20 men of prime working age, like Henderson, was not working; today that ratio is about one in five, the highest ever recorded.”

With anticipated growth in the area of health care, elder care and social care women are naturally gifted to work in those growing industries.    The baby boomer generation is beginning to retire and living longer will require more assistance as they age.   It is likely that many age related issues will require much more individual care or assistance, thus creating a much bigger market for the home care industry. 

Think about the issues retiring boomers will face.

1. Replacement knees, hips  (and more)

2. Exercise and fitness programs

3.  Diet awareness to prevent or reduce the incidence of diet related disease.

4. In home care for those who want to maintain an independent lifestyle

5. Mental health (Alzheimer’s, dementia, …)

6. Travel – more retirees will want to see the world than ever before.

7. Financial management – how do you ensure the finances will last.

Women have been natural care givers and will be the architects for a new economy.  

What will coaching offer women entering these new growth fields?

1. Goal setting and strategic planning

2. Accountability  (moving towards the goal)

3. Conflict resolution resources

4. Communication skills

5. Time management

The world of work is changing quickly.   Being prepared to contribute in this new world is going to present a new set of challenges and necessary changes.
