reach your goal in 7 steps

The great achievers in this world have set great goals.    Earnest Shackleton set forth to explore Antarctica and while not achieving the goals he set forth to accomplish he was driven to succeed.  

Setting goals drives people towards success even if the goals change over time.  Goals are internal motivators.  Goals provide the mind a focal point, something that can create a driving force for personal change.   A goal is something important to go after and achieve.   What goals do you have?

Setting goals

1. Remember a time when you were happy, very happy.   Remember that moment.

2. Use that positive energy and thought experience to explore ideas that would create a similar feeling.   Write down all the ideas you have (goals, desires, wants).

3.  Find the best ideas in that list and take the best five ideas (goals that you’d like to achieve).

4.  Which idea is the most strong out of that list of five, the most important for you right now.   Circle that idea.

5. Break that idea into action points.
    –  What is the five year goal (if the goal is that big)?
    – Where do you want to be in 3 years?
    – Where do you want to be in 2 years?
    – Where do you want to be in 1 year?
    – Where do you want to be in 6 months.

6. What needs to be done to achieve the 6 month goal.  What steps will you want to take?

7. Take action, start working towards that 6 month goal.  ( If it makes sense break the 6 month goal into one month goals.  )

Setting small reachable and doable tasks are important if you are to reach your goal.   As each small goal is achieved find a way to celebrate that success.  Keep building up the momentum and success will be easier to obtain.

Find someone who will hold you accountable for reaching each small goal along the way.   That person should be non-judgmental in their approach, and an encourager when the work is hard and tiring.

  1. Good simple information. Easier said than done but if you don’t actually take the steps to create your future you’ll never get there.

    I have NO lack of motivation as far as what I want to accomplish. It is the steps that leave me confused at times.
    I have manages to create my first site on sleep and snoring and am working on my next one, as well as a site for a friend. If someone had told me that I would have accomplished this a year ago I wouldn’t have believed them. It is worthy of celebration!

  2. I think this is great advice for concrete goals, but I always have problems setting up steps for the less tangible and more emotional goals. I think it’s harder to achieve these unless you have help or really know what you need to do.

    • So if the goal is more abstract then it is more difficult to achieve or is it more difficult to define what the outcome would be?

      What are the benefits of achieving the goal?

      What would be the things that are satisfying about reaching the goal?

      What does the goal mean to you?

      It might be that the questions would need to be changed. Of course having a coach to work with you on those issues is a great way to get the results you desire.
