desire to grow

“The only way that we can live, is if we grow. The only way that we can grow is if we change. The only way that we can change is if we learn. The only way we can learn is if we are exposed. And the only way that we can become exposed is if we throw ourselves out into the open. Do it. Throw yourself.”
― C. JoyBell C.

Are you growing?   Are you developing your profession?  Are you investing in yourself?   Are you becoming more than you were yesterday?

Many people leave out their own growth in the quest to live a happy life and find that working on all the other things while important doesn’t always lead to a happier life.  Personal growth in some shape or fashion does help create change, change towards something better.

How many books have you read this year?

What kinds of books are you reading?

How is new information helping you grow?

What do you want to grow towards?

Stay curious and grow.

live out your dream

“Some ideas are not born of logic and good sense. They are made of clouds and cobwebs. They sprout from nowhere and feed on excitement, sprinkled with adventure juice and the sweet flavor of the forbidden. The psyche moves from the realms of the ordinary and takes a delicate step towards the unknown. We know we shouldn’t and that is exactly why we do.”
― Brigid Lowry

What are your dreams?   No, not the things you dream at night, but your dreams, desires and longings?   What do you really want to accomplish in your life?

What actions have you taken to get your dream off of the ground?

If you’re like most people you haven’t taken your dreams seriously.   You might be thinking dreams are for those other people, those people who have the time, the money, the …., the something you don’t have.

Your life has the greatest meaning, the greatest potential when you put into energy and heart into living out one of your dreams.   Think about it, what makes you come alive most?   Is it the work you are doing now?  Is it?

Take a step towards living that dream.  Maybe it’s making a small change in your life.  Maybe it’s taking a vacation that you’ve been thinking about for years.   Maybe it’s time right now to start doing rather than dreaming about your dream.

Explore the dream … see what a dream can look like for you.

Look at Josh’s idea of a dream.

lead your ship

“The ship of my life may or may not be sailing on calm and amiable seas. The challenging days of my existence may or may not be bright and promising. Stormy or sunny days, glorious or lonely nights, I maintain an attitude of gratitude. If I insist on being pessimistic, there is always tomorrow. Today I am blessed.”
— Maya Angelou

You are the captain of your ship, the ship you sail in calm seas and when the seas a full of rage.  You are the captain of your ship.   You lead the crew even if it is only you on  your mission through life.     Do you know where you are going?

Be clear on your destination, know where you want to go and have a plan.

Be certain that you are willing to do what it takes to get where you want to go.

Be committed to taking the steps that will allow you to achieve your goals.

Three simple ideas that take work and effort in order to realize a result.

1. Clarity

2. Certainty

3. Commitment

We are approaching the time of year that people are ready to start off with something new, something that will redefine their life for the better.   It takes willpower to move  through the resistance that will be created when you undertake any level of personal change or professional change.

Lead your ship.   Move away from the  dock and move out into the seas of change.   Experience growth, challenge and the satisfaction when push yourself beyond your personal boundaries.

You can lead!

Be creative …

“It’s not about breaking the rules. It is about abandoning the concept of rules altogether” – Paul Lemberg

What does it take to be creative?   Normally it takes  a big leap from where you are right now so that you would create a sense of personal risk.   It is a step into the unknown, it is a new experience, and it would be foreign to your way of thinking.   Certainly there is incremental creativity which is based on taking what you know now and extending it in a new direction.   What I am thinking about takes a bigger leap, it means leaving behind the set of assumptions you use to bound your creativity.

How do you get outside of your own way of thinking?   What causes you to stretch?

Some people use tools like mind mapping to extend their scope of thinking.    A new resource called Murally looks interesting and may open doors to collaborate in new ways.

Stanford is offering a class in creativity and there is approximately 35000 students participating.   How do you manage a class of 35000?    How do you review the work of 35000 people who are turning in work?   No matter what the assignment is the idea of reviewing that volume of work is prohibitive.  35000 students is probably more students than most professors teach in a lifetime of teaching.

When you are pressed with a challenge you’ve never experienced before, what do you do?    Do you think in a new way or do you follow the patterns that you habitually use?
What about a different approach?

What if you were asked to meet people from some place in the world you’ve never been what would you do?   What would you have in common with others?  Well that was the first assignment in the class on creativity.   Here’s a sample.

creativity … right brain thinking

“True intelligence operates silently. Stillness is where creativity and solutions to problems are found.” — Eckhart Tolle

Where do your best ideas come from?

Are you able to use your creative talents daily?    When do you use your creativity?

Creativity leads to innovation if action is taken and that is what thwarts many creative people, the inability to take action.    Having great ideas works when something becomes of them.   Perhaps you have tons of great ideas and they are carefully written in a book, the ideas are there but they aren’t going anywhere.  What would it take to take the best ideas and take action on them?

If you are thinking, “I’m not a creative thinker” then try to different approaches to solving problems.   For example Daniel Pink suggests that you give the problem to someone else to solve.   Gretchen Rubin the author of the “Happiness Project” has these suggestions to generate new ideas.

Some people just draw pictures and link those pictures to a central theme, or do what is popularly called “Mind Mapping“.    There are other brain storming methods that can be used to generate new ideas, ideas that can improve your life.    Visiting a book store can be a good way to look at things in a new way, new ideas and new thoughts can lead to your innovative spirit coming to life.

Some ideas to cultivate creative thoughts:

1. Invite some friends over for a creativity party.

2. Take a walk

3. Journal – and then reflect on what you wrote

4. Solve a problem for someone else

5. Play with some children .. let them solve a problem for you.

6. Take something apart blindfolded

7. Read a book you normally wouldn’t read

The idea is to shift you out of your comfort zone, your normal zone of thinking, so that you exercise a part of the brain you don’t normally use.   Flip things upside down, tackle the idea from a different point of view and see what happens.    Change the rules to a game, like Monopoly or Scrabble, what can you come up with?

Elizabeth Gilbert the author of “Eat, Pray, Love” talks about the creativity challenge …

What are your creativity challenges? What would spark a new idea? What would cause you to leap to action?

If It’s Not a 10x Improvement, Is It Really Worth Doing?  Marc Andreessen

10X … something to consider.   What are you doing that is 10X better at?   Are you 10X better in your job?   Are you 10X better in  your relationships?  Are you 10X better of a person?   What in your life is 10X better than it was before?

 Why 10X?

10X is ten times better.   Take a goal that you have and make it bigger and better.   Most people think if they just double their performance it will be good enough.   Not any more.   Doubling your effort or even your results won’t lead to a breakthrough in thinking and doing.   It takes a 10X improvement to make the breakthroughs to get out of the box.

If you set a goal that is 10X bigger than your original goal you’ll have a better chance of achieving a real result.   Losing weight, go bigger than your goal.  Your goal to lose a couple of pounds a month might be good but it will also be easy to revert back to the old ways.    If you had to go 10X what would you really need to change?

Think about your job or your career.   What would make it 10X better than it is today?   It would take something pretty radical and it wouldn’t just be something small, it would have to be a big change.   Are you in the right career?   Are you doing what you are really passionate about?

Your finances, where are they today?   Where do you want them to be?   Go for a 10X goal.   What would have to change or be different to reach that goal.

In the world of personal development and personal improvement on person is doing just that, turning his world into 10X.   Brendon Bruchard is leading a charge to change the way people think about doing things.   10X, think about it.  Where could you change something by creating a goal that is 10X what you originally thought of?   What can you do 10X better?

Take a look at Brendon’s passion. 10X is what he is giving.

What are you giving 10X to?

No matter where you are today, think about something you will make 10X better this year. Set a goal and make it 10X bigger. Push the limits of your imagination, your skills and your results. Go beyond what you think possible.

Now take it 10X.

Here’s another perspective. 10X it.

It doesn’t matter what you are doing, there is a seismic shift in thinking that is happening all around you and there is going to be a seismic shift in how the world will operate. Are you going to be ready?

Before you agree to do anything that might add even the smallest amount of stress to your life, ask yourself: What is my truest intention? Give yourself time to let a yes resound within you. When it’s right, I guarantee that your entire body will feel it.   Oprah Winfrey, O Magazine

It is what gets you from point A to point B, intention.   It is a motivating and driving force that enables you to do and to be.   Everything that you do starts with with an idea.  The idea grows in size and power until there is action.   The natural growth of that idea into an energetic force is intention.

Intention to do.   Intention to be.   Intention is like a compass pointing you in a direction.    Attention that follows intention is what starts you on that journey to reach that goal.   The intention precedes attention to the goal.

Often what is needed to transform and idea or thought into intention is a catalyst.    Words can acts as catalysts,  words like “creativity”, “kindness”, “love”, “beauty”, “abundant”,  and “receptive”.

Take each word and expand the meaning of the word in terms of being a catalyst for doing and being.

What can you create?    What idea can you take and add to it.    How is creativity like a flower?

What does kindness look like to you?   What acts of kindness can you do today?  What does intentional kindness look like?    What does kindness feel like?

What is the intention of love?   What does it take to be intentional about love?  What can you do to be intentional about love today?

Observe.   Take some time out to discover beauty around you.   Just look and notice.   The act of being intentional about noticing beauty may be eye-opening.  What are you noticing?

What does abundant mean to you?    Does it mean available?   Does it mean large in quantity?   Does it mean high in quality?   What is abundance?   Lack of want?  What do you have abundance of?    What are you desiring to be more abundant in your life?

Open to something new.    How are you being receptive to your thoughts?   How are you looking at your thoughts in terms of creating more abundance, more love, more beauty, more kindness and more creativity?   Intention starts with your ability to receive into your life the very things that surround you today.   Use what you have to get what you want.   Use your creativity, use your kindness, use your love, use the beauty, use your abundant ideas to live with greater intention.

Listen to what Deepak Chopra has to say about intention.   What are you doing to be more intentional about your life?
