energy factors

“The sage produces without possessing, acts without expectations, and accomplishes without abiding in her accomplishments. It is precisely because she does not abide in them that they never leave her.”

Our brain influences more powerfully with negative messages. Have you noticed those days when your energy levels just seem to be depleted? What makes one day significantly different from any other day? What engages you so that you have energy?

Your thoughts play a big part in how much energy you have and how  you feel.   The good part is that you can change your thoughts at any time.   You’ve already done this before, you’ve turned a lot of negative energy (anger) into neutral energy in a second.    In flash you can go from angry to kind and kind to angry.     You can go from being filled with energy to feeling totally drained.   What changed?

Bad news.   Someone conveys bad news to you and suddenly a sense of fear or loss stirs within you.  Just before that you were energized, happy and motivated and in an instant it drained away.

Would it be a true statement to say that all of your negative feelings, lack of energy is self-generated?    Your energy (or lack thereof) doesn’t come from the circumstances you face, but rather to the attention you give the circumstances and judge as good or bad, favorable or unfavorable.

You have the ability to tap into your positive energy by noticing that you have within you a capacity for empathy, exploration, innovation, direction and action.   Putting a focus on each of those five elements enables you to build internal energy.

The first step to reducing energy zapping moments is to acknowledge those moments.   This isn’t a time to judge the event.   It is a time to notice the event and looking at it without a filter of being either good or bad, just notice it as an event.   “this event took place and I feel ____________”.

When you focus on the event with judgement it clouds your ability to look for opportunity in the event.   In other words it narrows the focus to a point where all the energy is focused on one thing … “you”.    Depending on the state of mind you are in that high focus could be negative or positive energy.   The likelihood of having a negative feeling is far greater than having a positive one.

To activate the positive, consider approaching the negative circumstances you experience in a new way.   Consider treating yourself with a dose of empathy.   Look for new ways to interpret your feelings.   Develop a new story, a story that has the ability to energize you.   Look for the opportunity in the situation.  Turn the energy into positive action.     Do something creative with your energy.

find greater satisfaction in work and life

“The really happy people are those who have broken the chains of procrastination, those who find satisfaction in doing the job at hand. They’re full of eagerness, zest, productivity. You can be, too.”
Norman Vincent Peale

A new study just released shows that organizations have a tool to determine if employees are fully engaged in work and life.   The results of this study show that if organizations want to keep employees that they need to determine how restless the employees are.

If the research from Right Management somewhere near 84% of employees desire to find something different to do, a new  job, a new career.  Burnout it seems is high when there are financial stresses, increased demands, fewer people to do the work, and a less appreciative staff.   Everyone is feeling the pinch in an economy that is slow to recover.

People who feel stuck in a job can carefully look at other opportunities and waiting for the right door to open.   Key players who feel they are putting in their all and getting little in return could bolt at the first opportunity.   The biggest factor in how an employee perceives their value is their manager or supervisor.  That relationship is critical and far too often that relationship isn’t what it should be.

Energy Leadership looks at energy as being either catabolic or anabolic.   Catabolic energy is defined as energy that negative in nature, it is the draining type of energy often found in people who are victims or are angry most of the time.   Shifting the energy towards an anabolic state would show an organization that employees are engaged and satisfied with their work.

Organizations can now through the use of the Energy Leadership Index determine how engaged their employees are.  They can find out just how engaged the management is as well.  It is far better to learn how well the organization is doing rather than waiting for a mass exodus and then asking the question, “Why did so many people leave?”.

What are your thoughts?   What are you looking for?

what is workplace engagement?

“All we achieve and all that we fail to achieve is the direct result of our own thoughts. We are today where your thoughts have brought you; you will be tomorrow where your thoughts take you.” James Allen

It wasn’t very long ago that I was talking to someone who was concerned about the wellbeing of their fellow employees.   A manager was using a vocabulary more suited for the bilges of a Navy ship to motivate those working for him.   Years ago the management model for encouraging people was the carrot and the stick.  For this unenlightened manager the stick was the tool he pulled out of his toolbelt.   The result, employees were “slowing” down being less attentive, and being less quality focused.   Management expects employees to do their best and produce only high quality goods and they will when they are encouraged to participate in the process.   When employees are ridiculed and disempowered they subtly disengage from the work process.   Sure there is movement, there are products ready to be shipped but the craftsmanship may be missing. What is it like at your place of work?   Empowering and engaging?

When a negative spiral starts it can spin out of control.  Each demand met with less engagement.  Employees may fear losing their job, manager’s fear losing the entire business.   As the fear increases workplace productivity decreases, orders diminish and a cycle that is hard to stop spins a bit faster each day … unless a change is made.

Stopping the spin … takes an act of courage and humility.

Seeing the results spin out of control is not a fun thing to watch.   For those running on a very tight budget every loss or poor quality product produced eats into the small margin of profit.   To regain control it requires those who are feeling the greatest impact of poor quality to step back and ask the question,”What are we doing to decrease quality?”, not from the production worker perspective but from the management layer.   What is happening that is causing people to disengage from work?   What is being said?   How is what is being said being interpreted?   How much fear is there?

When an organization shifts into a “victim” level of thinking (everything is everyone else’s fault) there is bound to be problems.    There must be  fundamental shift in thinking from negative to positive.  Anger has to shift to forgiveness.  Victim level thinking needs to move to opportunity, creating win/win outcomes at all levels of the organization.

What kind of organization do you work for?   What kind of messages are being sent to the employees?   What are you empowered to do?   What is your engagement level?

“The vision is really about empowering workers, giving them all the information about what’s going on so they can do a lot more than they’ve done in the past.” Bill Gates

Live energetically

“Love the moment and the energy of the moment will spread beyond all boundaries.”

Sister Corita Kent

Energy is the source of our life and the more engaging positive energy we have inside us the better our life will be.    When you have great thoughts your life improves.   When you have thoughts that everything is going to go wrong it usually does.   We focus on what we want to see rather than focusing on what is really there.

Think about the car you drive, you probably see all kinds of those cars when you are driving because you are aware of that type of car.   So much of what happen around us is based on our view of the world, and what we are paying attention to.   Pink elephants.

If it is your thoughts that make you “feel” a certain way then what would it take to change those thoughts.   Why are you thinking what you are thinking right now?

What are you worried about?

What do you fear?

What is causing you anxiety or pain?

What pushes your buttons?

What makes you angry?

What makes you happy?

Now, these questions aren’t causing anything to happen, but your reaction to the questions might.   For example your buttons might get pushed by the way someone drives, maybe they drive too slow, or they don’t signal their intentions, or they pull right in front of you even though there is an open road ahead.   Maybe it is the incessant whine of a child who isn’t getting what they want.  For some people who don’t have children a child who is crying or whining gets on their nerves.

So, things that push your buttons rob you of your energy.  You start to feel stress and that negative energy wants to be released.    Likewise when you are filled with positive energy (laughter, joy,  happi ness) you want to release that energy as well.   Which would you rather share, your positive energy or your negative energy?   Which energy do you think brings people towards you and engages them?    Someone laughing hysterically usually draws on-lookers as they want to have whatever that happiness is.   Someone yelling angrily will cause people to walk as far away as possible from that situation.

Your energetic view of life is a choice that you make.  If your thoughts are generally negative and disempowering then you’d feel a lot better if you could shift those thoughts to positive ones.   Those who have a positive outlook on life would feel even better when they are able to increase their positive thinking.

What kind of thoughts do you most frequently have?

What kind of thoughts do you want?

What is stopping you from having more positive thoughts?
