the Zone

“You’re right in the work, you lose sense of time, you’re completely enraptured, you’re completely caught up in what you’re doing … there’s no future or past, it’s just an extended present in which you’re making meaning …”  Mark Strand

What does it mean to be in the “zone”?    For some it is a magical experience where time seems to stand still and the mind and body are fused in harmony.   Some would call it the perfect moment a synchronous dance between the external world and your internal world.   Athletes are in the zone when they are at their peak in terms of experience, this harmony, or flow, or being in the zone often produces great results.

The key ingredients to getting into the zone include:

1. A clear goal

2. Activity that provides feedback

3. A focus that becomes intense.

The idea is to achieve a balance between anxiety (fear of failure) and not being challenged enough (the goal is too easy).   Somewhere between failure and challenge is the zone, a zone of mental harmony and maximum results.

Some athletes prepare to get into the zone by using visualization techniques.

“We have all experienced times when, instead of being buffeted by anonymous forces, we do feel in control of our actions, masters of our own fate. On the rare occasions that it happens, we feel a sense of exhilaration”, writes Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi the author of the book, “Flow”.      Getting into that experience even for a short amount of time is a worthy experience.   Staying in that experience for a long period of time proves to be a challenge.   The zone is a space between challenge and ability and as the ability increases there is a shift out of the zone.   If the challenge increases without a corresponding increase in ability then there is too much tension to stay in the zone.

The zone is a place of harmony, appropriate challenge, the right frame of mind and sufficient capability to maintain the experience.

When have you been in the zone?

What was it like to be in the zone?

What kept you in the zone?

The zone is emphasized in sport, but what about other areas of life and how do you get into the zone?

You

“Each person comes into this world with a specific destiny–he has something to fulfill, some message has to be delivered, some work has to be completed. You are not here accidentally–you are here meaningfully. There is a purpose behind you. The whole intends to do something through you.” Osho

You!

What about you?

What do you do?

What do you want to do?

Who are you being?

What do you believe?

Why do you believe?

You … it’s your story.  It’s your life.

You give!

You receive!

You live!

You work.

You play.

You engage.

You win.

You lose.

You laugh.

You cry.

You do.

You don’t do.

What do you say about you?

Who do you want to be?

You think.

You grow.

You tell.

You listen.

You slow down.

You speed up.

You lie.

You stand.

What do YOU want to do?

… now is the time …

Have you ever experienced a profound sense of peace and joy that came together at the same moment.   Some would call that a state of bliss, or presence.  A moment when time stood still, the past wasn’t calling you back and the future wasn’t pulling you forward, you were in the present.

Being in the present is a time when life is filled with  purpose and feels magical.  Sometimes those moments last only a few seconds,  a few minutes and then disappear as worries about the future creep back or anger about the past drags you down.   Where are  you?

When have you experienced a magical moment where time stood still, where time didn’t press you backwards or forwards, but just stopped?

Authentic living is living between the past and the future.   It is a place where so many people want to be and somehow they have seem to have lost the ability to live between the past and the future.   Where are you living?   Are you living for the future, a place of worry,  or are you tied to the past, a life of regret and anger?  What is your answer?

just words

“Words do two major things: They provide food for the mind and create light for understanding and awareness.”  Jim Rohn

Words take you on journeys to distant lands.  Words can create dreams that illuminate a path, a path where the choices you make bring light to your future.   For some people words condemn and hold them to the past, a nightmarish recollection of what once was.

Words that turn off the creative senses  leave the mind as a vast dry desert.
Words that churn in place in the mind  grate at the soul and produce worry, anxiety, and even panic.   Words, just words, just mixed up words and feelings that form chains that hold you back from realizing something better.

,p>Those words that collide with your heart, what are they saying?    What is it that the words are trying to do?   What words are you filling your mind with?    Are you filling your mind with the words of hope, experience, confidence, wisdom and beauty?
Many people fill their minds with words that say ,”No you can’t”, “Who are you to be that?”,  “You aren’t good enough?”,  “Don’t even try that”, or “You’ll just fail again.”     What are you filling your mind with?

Now how about putting some of these words to use in your daily life.

Acknowledge someone.
Affirm someone.
Thank someone.
Smile at someone.
Use your words to build up yourself and others.

“When true self-remembering comes, one does not want to alter oneself, or others; one somehow rises above their weaknesses and one’s own. There can be no blame anywhere. One swallows what is, and becomes free.”
Rodney Collin

the best you can do

What if you could live in a world where there were no mistakes?   What would that look like for you?

What if, starting today you could start viewing the world from the perspective that everyone, every second of every day is doing the best that they can?   What would you think of that statement?

You might think based on the ills of the world that people, bad people could do better.   However in the milliseconds it takes to make a choice based on what a person is facing the choice they make might just be the best choice they have.

When we look at mistakes we are stepping back into the past, a past that can not be changed all that exists is the present moment.   From thought to thought, from action to action, each moment is what it is.   There is no right or wrong in that moment, it just is what it is.

That idea might be hard to grasp for many people, but when you wrestle with it and look at it from all angles, you’ll find that in a moment, a flash of a moment our actions are a result of who we are at that single moment.   Whatever it is, happens.   Now that doesn’t mean for things that are illegal or improper that there won’t be consequences that have to be paid, but in that split second of a moment a decision was made, a choice was made and that appeared to be the best choice given the information and conditions that existed at that time.

It might not mean that if someone else had to make that same choice that the decision would be different, it just means the decision that was made was the best for that brief moment in time.

If you remove judgment from the equation and look at the event as just that an event, a new reality unfolds.

What would be different in your life if you didn’t regard decisions that didn’t work as a mistake, but rather an opportunity to learn from?   There would be no need to beat up yourself about the issue, learn, go and grow.   Make the changes and when that same decision comes up again you can respond differently.

How would the ability to let go of judgment impact your life?

“As you begin to take action toward the fulfillment of your goals and dreams, you must realize that not every action will be perfect. Not every action will produce the desired result. Not every action will work. ”

Jack Canfield

The answer

People are always blaming their circumstances for what they are.  I don’t believe in circumstances.  The people who get on in this world are the people who get up and look for the circumstances they want, and, if they can’t find them, make them.  ~G.B. Shaw, Mrs. Warren’s Profession, 1893

What do you want?

Many people don’t know what they want except that they want something they don’t have.   People seek an answer to the mystery and some spend their lives seeking the answer that they already have,  for most of their life.   The answer is within.

It’s your life – what are you doing with it?

What words express the content, meaning and fullness of your life?   Are you living your life fully?
