ADHD Awareness month …

“Insecurities have the ability to shape and mold our minds to live with everything that’s bad; like crying on the inside, while smiling on the outside…thus creating pain…but, alas, I have the answer; forget about what you thought and enjoy (embrace) what you feel”
― Jeremy Aldana

There are a lot of adults with ADHD (Attention Deficit(Hyperactivity) Disorder) and it impacts every day of their life in ways that don’t always produce positive results.   ADHD is like looking at the stars … too many ideas, too many thoughts, and too many things forgotten.

People with ADHD are often very creative and intelligent and struggle with things like staying on task, staying focused, getting things done on time or just being organized enough to remember the next appointment.  In a world filled with distractions people with ADHD are over distracted and that can impact their work, their relationships and their sense of well-being.

Learning how to manage ADHD can improve the life of a person with ADHD.   Learning about ADHD can help the people without ADHD understand how ADHD impacts those with ADHD.

Between Oct 26 and Nov 1 there is a FREE virtual conference on ADHD that you can sign up and attend.   If you know of someone with ADHD then have them sign up and learn the latest in ADHD management strategies.

You can sign-up here REGISTER FOR THE VIRTUAL ADHD CONFERENCE.  Register today and find out ways to take charge of ADHD (for you or someone you know).

focal point … the daily goal

“He well knew his mind’s natural tendency to be endlessly on a thousand subjects at once, to flit from this to that and to the next thing to no particular purpose–indeed, he called it his “butterfly mind.”   Eric Metaxas

Focus – on the one thing.   Our society is turning more and more into a society with more ADHD like attributes.  People are being asked to do more than one thing at a time and it is killing productivity.   You’ve read the hiring ads, “must be able to handle multiple tasks” or “handle multiple interrupts and work on several projects in parallel”.   Study after study show that the mind can not do more than “one” thing at a time.   What employers are asking for are people that are willing to fail to deliver results.

There are people who say they can multitask, that can do more than one thing at once.  Try solving 2 math problems at the same time in your head.   Try typing and listening at the same time (really listening).   If you’re typing and listening then try repeating back what you heard.   Type at your normal rhythm and then listen to something with some level of thought required, what happens?  Now try that same exercise only focusing on the typing and then just listening?   What were the results?    Try that exercise and time it.   Time how long it takes to do the typing and listening alone.   Then do those same two tasks at the same time.   What was different?

Focus, the brain works better when you focus on completing just one thing at a time.    Perhaps some of your day is going to be interrupt driven, where requests  come flying at you from all sides.   Dedicate a part of the day to being inefficient. Also dedicate a part of the day where there are no meetings, just focused, one objective at a time results driven work.    Make the chunk of time to dedicate to focused work about 90 minutes.   If possible get two 90 minute blocks of time to focus only on getting work done.  No calls – no email – no interruptions – just focused work.

Experiment – just try doing one thing at a time.

Write down the key goal for the day.   Why are you doing that one thing?   Is that the most important thing that should be done today?   What will it take to get it done?    When is it going to get done?  And then break down the big goal into some tasks – things that are easier to digest and attack them with all vigor.   Note the results, what was the outcome and did you achieve the intended outcome?

I have a goal … do you?

Some people leaving a lasting legacy, some people encourage others to take a step that is bigger and more bold than they thought they could.   Some people make a difference in the lives of others.

Jim Rohn has been called such a man, a man who helped others reach further than they could have imagined.   So, what follows is an excerpt of some of Jim’s words.   Read them and then set a goal, a goal that will fuel you to greater success, wisdom and happiness.

Take charge of your life – leave a legacy – shape the world – you can!

— Now read the words of Jim Rohn —

The major reason for setting a goal is for what it makes of you to accomplish it. What it makes of you will always be the far greater value than what you get.

When Andrew Carnegie died, they discovered a sheet of paper upon which he had written one of the major goals of his life: to spend the first half of his life accumulating money and to spend the last half of his life giving it all away. And he did!

Some people are disturbed by those tough days because all they have is the days. They haven’t designed or described or defined the future.

Goals. There’s no telling what you can do when you get inspired by them. There’s no telling what you can do when you believe in them. And there’s no telling what will happen when you act upon them.

We all need lots of powerful long-range goals to help us past the short-term obstacles.

The ultimate reason for setting goals is to entice you to become the person it takes to achieve them.

Don’t set your goals too low. If you don’t need much, you won’t become much.

If you go to work on your goals, your goals will go to work on you. If you go to work on your plan, your plan will go to work on you. Whatever good things we build end up building us.

We all have two choices: We can make a living or we can design a life.

seasons

Seasons of the year tend to be what most people think about when they think of, spring, summer, autumn, and winter, and those are the seasons. We also have seasons in our life, discovery, accomplishment, significance, and sharing. We can have seasons in a single day, awakening, work, relaxation and sleep.

We are now in the autumn season with respect to how the earth precesses around sun. In life autumn is the season where many reflect on years of work, perhaps in a career only to realize that all that work wasn’t so meaningful. Maybe there is a feeling of restlessness which fuels a desire to do something meaningful during the next few years. Is there a gap in your life where you may be feeling like all life has been is work and without significance? What would make your life significant?

Dream more

“Promise yourself to dream more and hesitate less.
To believe in yourself more
and judge yourself less by
the accomplishment of others.” Deanna Beisser

Dream more and hesitate less. How is it that our dreams shrink back when we hesitate to turn those dreams into goals and into action? How many opportunities will slip by when we hesitate to take action?

When we hesitate we lose momentum, when we lose momentum we lose the power to create. The waterwheel was used to power 19th century factories and it was the engine of the economy. When the water stopped moving so did the waterwheel and so did the factories.

Hope is the fuel of dreams. Robert Kennedy said, “Each time a person stands up for an idea, or acts to improve the lot others, or strikes out against injustice, (s)he sends forth a ripple of hope, …”. Action is a dream that has momentum. Action is what sees a dream turn into a creative river of possibilities.

Now, sometimes we just need to step back and relax ….
