Begin!  That is all it takes to start something is to begin and yet far too many people put of that very task of getting started.     How many things have you put off waiting for tomorrow, the day that never comes.

Personal happiness, even professional happiness is tied directly to the actions you take not to the actions you don’t take.   Happiness isn’t something that comes to you as a result, happiness comes to you when you do something that you believe is useful.

Leadership expert John Maxwell suggests that we look at four things as that can result in having a happier life.

1. Create and nurture relationships.    People are meant to engage with other people.  Learning how to develop, grow and value relationships.

2. Make decisions.   Making decisions that support who you are and your strengths that are based on sound reasoning will improve outcomes in your life.  It takes discipline and practice to make good decisions.

3. Continual growth.   What are you doing to continually improve upon “who” you are.   That could mean additional education and skills or it could mean doing something that allows you to grow as a person, or it could be learning from the lessons of life.  Take time to reflect on each day and evaluate what you learned.

4. Adding value.   How can you add value to others?   Instead of looking at what you can get ask yourself what you can give.    Shift the equation around, how can I add value to others?   What can I bring to someone else in terms of value?   When you look at the personal development industry you’ll see countless experts giving away information, time and value, so that others can grow and develop.

What does it take to get started?    What does it take to go from waiting to beginning to make a difference?   It takes you taking action.   Stop waiting for tomorrow and start DOING today.

1. Who can you develop a stronger relationship with TODAY?

2. What decision are you holding off making?   What is stopping you from making that decision?

3. What can you do now to improve your personal or professional growth?

4. Who can you add value to?    Shift from “I” to “you”.   What can you do?

Years ago there was a movie about the continual bad news that was heard, news that help people captive to inaction, to being a victim of the circumstances rather than an owner of the solution.   The movie was  “NETWORK” and the newscaster asked people to get up and yell …    It’s time to begin and take action.

Everyday is a day to be of value to someone.   No matter where you are or what business you are in you can be of value to someone.   In fact it is better to create value, to add value to everything you do.

Create value in some fashion or in some manner for someone or some cause.   It might be something simple and easy to do.  It might be a kind word, a word of thanks, or a word of appreciation.    Add a smile to your day, a smile has power and value, try it.   As an experiment try smiling at someone  you don’t know, just smile and experience the power of a smile.

Consider the work you are doing today.  What one thing can you do to improve the quality and or lower the cost of the services you are providing?  How can you add more value?   In a world where there is more and more competition it is important to find competitive differentiators into the work environment.

Albert Schweitzer said, “I don’t know what your destiny will be, but one thing I know: the only ones among you who will be really happy are those who have sought and found how to serve.”   Serving is another way to add value, immense value to a world that is suffering.

Look at the relationships you have, how are you adding value to the most important relationships you have?    It is easy to neglect or ignore important relationships because there is an assumption that it will always be there.  Given the statistics on divorce in America those assumptions are probably incorrect.

And finally, be of value to yourself.    Focus on your diet, take time out to get exercise  and make sure you get enough sleep.   If you’re not healthy it is difficult to add value to others.    Spend time developing yourself and that means turning off the TV and opening a book instead.   Living in a media saturated culture means that we are being bombarded with a lot of useless information (the news is filled with useless information) and it would be better to focus on information that is positive.

Are you seeking success or seeking to create value?

Of course there is a context for success and value,  in a classroom perhaps, you are creating success for yourself.    The value is in the learning.

The most successful people are continually learning, continually adding value to themselves and to others.   It is the continual learning that creates value that leads to success.   The most successful people spend much more than the average person on developing their skills.    The less successful, or even unsucessful, spend more time entertaining themselves than they do actively engaging in learning something new.

In a world that is only getting more and more competitive the entertainment lifestyle will have to give way to continuous learning and the result of continually being able to add value to the organization, community, and others in the world around you.

Now, if the most successful people spend 10% on reinventing themselves by learning something new each day, what are you doing to increase your success and value?
