Two wolves … attitude

Attitude is something you own and have control over.   In many life situations people demand control over the outcome.  Most of the time they realize that control is an illusion.   In fact we have very little control or perceived control of our lives.   There is one thing we do control and that is our attitude.

We own 100% of our attitude.   Attitude is a choice we make in every circumstance good or bad.   It is our choice to be mad, sad or glad.  We can be angry at the driver who is driving what looks like inches off of our back bumper.   We can be angry that the day didn’t work out the way we wanted.

Attitude has power.

This story is a great example of what we can do with attitude.

 

Two Wolves

One evening an old Cherokee told his grandson about a battle that goes on inside people.

He said, “My son, the battle is between two “wolves” inside us all. One is Evil. It is anger, envy, jealousy, sorrow, regret, greed, arrogance, self-pity, guilt, resentment, inferiority, lies, false pride, superiority, and ego. The other is Good. It is joy, peace, love, hope, serenity, humility, kindness, benevolence, empathy, generosity, truth, compassion, and faith.”

The grandson thought about it for a minute and then asked his grandfather, “Which wolf wins?”

The old Cherokee simply replied, “The one you feed.”

It is the year 2014 and you’ve suddenly realized that your life isn’t exactly what you wanted it to be.   The world has changed again and you weren’t ready again.   The peaks and valleys of the world’s economic engine keeps shifting and leaving you feeling totally unsure of what to do next.

The decisions you make today will impact how you live in 2014.  Are you preparing for the next wave of change today?   Are you seeking the way to tomorrow?

What things in your life today are not as you’d like them to be?   Which of those things is the most important to address?   It is important to identify the area that you feel has the greatest potential to increase your happiness, self-worth, self-esteem and value.   What one area in your life would you like to see positive change?

What will you do to make that area better?

Jeffrey Gitomer has a couple of hints on what it takes to become better.

  1. Define your commitment to yourself
  2. Define your commitment to others

What are you going to do to better yourself?

What are you going to do to better others?

In other words work on yourself so that you have the best capabilities you can possibly have and keep working towards mastery of the topic you choose to have the best capabilities in.    Then help others become better, help others have a better day, a better career, a better life, a better experience and greater happiness.

are you able?

Are you ABLE?

John Piper wrote a book called “Don’t waste your life”.     We only have once chance to make everyday excellent and that happens when we engage in the activities of the day.   

ABLE

Attitude:  What is your attitude?  positive, optimistic, future facing, journey, risk accepting, happy, joyful, grateful, …

Belief:  Do you have confidence in your abilities?  Do you have the opportunity to use your talents and gifts most of the time?   Do you believe in yourself?

Learning:  Are you making a daily effort to learn more?  Perhaps it is learning about your strengths, your job or other tangible components of your life.   What are you learning that helps you become all that you were designed to be?

Engagement:  Are you actively participating in building the life you were intended to live?

 

No matter what happens in the circumstances of our lives we have exactly one chance to do the right thing.    How often have you read the story where the right thing to do was not the popular thing to do?   How often have you read about a sequence of events that turned tragic because the right thing wasn’t done? 

In many cases the right thing might be managing our attitude when life’s events are not favorable.   Our attitude sets the stage for everything else in our day.    Our attitude sets the stage for everything in our life.

Our attitude can be learned.   We can train ourselves to have the kind of attitude that creates opportunities rather than drowns them.   Attitude is a choice, a moment by moment choice but a choice nonetheless.

Belief in yourself is the first step in creating a remarkable life.    For some people the words of others shaped their self-belief, either for the good or for the bad.  In many cases those words were not words of truth that helped the person grow and discover their possibilities, they were words that tried to injure and defeat. 

Everyone has skills and talents they can use.  Some people fear to use their talents because of the criticism that might follow.   

Restoring self-belief takes work, time and effort.   Start small and build your confidence in little steps.   Then after a few steps look at the progress you have made.  Celebrate the progress.  Believe that you can do more – you can.

Take the time to learn something new.   Learn something new daily, about yourself, about your world, about your work but learn something new daily. 

The world is changing far too quickly to neglect or put off learning.  Challenge yourself and challenge others make learning fun and beneficial.

Maya Angelou wrote, “love life, engage in it, give it all you’ve got. love it with a passion, because life truly does give back, many times over, what you put into it”

Engage fully in the life you are living.   Do life with intention.  Live life in full.  When you are engaged in life you are changing the circumstances around you.   You are creating possibilities for yourself.

Are you ABLE?

Affirm someone

You matter.

You are important.

You make a difference.

Those are affirmations that you can say to yourself everyday.  

Susan Jeffers writes about affirmations in this little book.  It is a great place to start thinking about what you can be.

Affirmations start with our attitudes about others and ourselves.    I was reminded that self-talk/affirmations played an important role during the Holocaust. Viktor Frankl wrote, “We who lived in concentration camps can remember the men who walked through the huts comforting others, giving away their last piece of bread. They may have been few in number, but they offer sufficient proof that everything can be taken from a man but one thing: the last of human freedoms- to choose one’s attitude in any given set of circumstances, to choose one’s own way.” (Frankl, “Man’s search for meaning”, p. 86).

Attitude is about choice,  a choice we make, and a choice that is shaped by our affirmations.

Do you believe that?  You can!  You will!

 

The power of positivity can transform a life.  The words we use – I can – I will – I am – are words of power.

Start your day with an action – “I will”, or “I can” or a belief “I am”.   Those are words that you own that can not be taken away from you.   I own my destination – I own this minute.  

I can make a difference.  You can!

I am and I will.

You might be missing one thing – a plan!   How will I do what I need to do?

What steps do you need to take to make it happen?

Here is a simple rule to apply to that plan.  Make it a SMART plan.

Make it Specific.

Make it Measureable.

Make it Actionable.

Make it Realistic.

Make it Timely.

That is right make a specific plan – focus.

Make it measurable – how are you going to know you are done?

Make it actionable – the plan has to be something doable.

Make it realistic – do something that is going to matter, has value, and meaning.

Make it timely – start today, and have a date to complete the plan.

A positive attitude about what faces each person every day is a key component in experiencing joy. How would you answer that statement?

When we face trails do we:

Stop blaming circumstances

Stop blaming other people

Think before talking

What do you want to build? Do you want to build a bridge to a new destination or a wall?

You can! You can be!

How do you think about yourself? What do you think of yourself?

If you stepped out of your body and looked at it as another person would what would they see?

What do you want to see that you don’t?

Do you believe in yourself? Why?

Imagine walking down a beach and what you see are a crisscross myriad of footsteps. You stop to look at some of them, footprints, footprints of children, footprints of those who wearing shoes, footprints etched deeply in the sand and others that just skim the surface. The waves move in to erase the canvas of footprints.

You put down your foot into the wet sand and you too leave an impression in the sand, your mark on the world an ephemeral mark as the water rises and sweeps up the sandy beach erasing all that was printed there. You notice three footprints – your footprints etched onto this large canvas and they tell your story.

The first footprint is the mark of your values. What is it that you value? What do you care deeply about? Write those values down? Oh, by the way, money is not a value. It is a tool. What are your values? Now that you have them written down, rate them in terms of desired importance in your life from 1 to 10. The value of one indicates that you are not even close to living out this value and a ten is saying out loud that this value is fully being realized. Are you able to live your values?

The second footprint is about your smile. We all can smile but do we? Do we practice smiling? Or, are we not able to smile because of the way we feel about ourselves or others. We have shutdown and stopped smiling. What makes you smile? When was the last time you were able to genuinely smile? You know the kind of smile, the one that is fueled from deep within. It is not the smile we can put on our face, this is a smile that erupts across our face without denial – it appears and you can’t erase it – it is alive. When was the last time you had one of those kinds of smiles?

The third footstep is a hunger for our personal truth. Dante writes, “Midway upon the journey of our life I found myself within a forest dark, For the straightforward pathway had been lost.” This footprint seems to be floating up and out of the sand and before long the print is lost. To seek the right path, to seek our personal truth requires that we be honest with ourselves. How can you find the right path?

Align your attitude with your values. Smile from within. Seek the right path – honestly.

“Our feelings of dissatisfaction, unhappiness, loss of hope and so forth are in fact related to all phenomena. If we do not adopt the right outlook, it is possible that anything and everything could cause us frustration. Yet phenomena are part of reality and we are subject to the laws of existence. So this leaves us only one option: to change our own attitude. By bringing about a change in our outlook towards things and events, all phenomena can become friends or sources of happiness, instead of becoming enemies or sources of frustration.”
