Are you living the life you want to live?    A lot of people aren’t living the life they want, they are existing but not living.   As a coach I get to talk to many people who are struggling and want to live a life that is different than the one they are living.

People are looking for a “secret” something that will improve their finances, fix a relationship, boost their career, help them lose weight, help them believe in themselves, repair broken relationships or to find joy and happiness in their lives.  There is no secret formula for creating the life you want without putting in the effort to get what you want.

Maybe the secret is a massive amount of work on the things you value the most.  The secret is starting and doing something that will lead to better results for you.

The point is that unless you do something different today your tomorrow won’t be any better than it was yesterday.   If you are waiting until conditions are perfect, until you have that one missing thing, before you start you’ll never ever start.

Your better life starts when you stop making excuses and decide to transform each day from now on.

How important is your health?

How important is your family?

How important are your relationships?

How important is your career?

How important is your personal and professional growth?

Take a few minutes and write down what is important to you.   Are you honoring what you value?

Many people choose to live a life of misery to show to their neighbors and friends how successful they are.   We equate success with finances and it isn’t working.   There are many, many people who have great bank accounts  who are living in personal poverty.   What is your life really like?  (Feel free to comment … share your story)

mediocre me …

mediocre – lacking exceptional quality or ability; “a novel of average merit”; “only a fair performance of the sonata”; “in fair health”; “the caliber of the students has gone from mediocre to above average”; “the performance was middling at best”

Maybe you know someone that lives a life of mediocrity.   What has that life brought them?   Is the mediocre life the kind of life that you would want to live?

Take a look at mediocrity, is this what you want?

People what to live extraordinary lives and at the same time rarely take the steps to live outside of mediocrity.   Think about the tons of self-help books that exist and the tons of self-help programs that are available and think about the vast ocean of self-help CD’s.   People buy the programs, read the books, listen to the CD’s and return to mediocrity.   What are you doing to live a life that is beyond mediocrity?

When was the last time you talked to someone who would work with you to move towards an exciting, positive rewarding goal?   When was the last time you took your life seriously?

What can you do to move beyond mediocrity?

1. Turn off the TV.  There is nothing on TV that adds value to your life.  What is there subtracts value from your life. 
2. Get the right amount of rest.   Get 7-8 hours of sleep per night.  Sleep is necessary to be fully alive during the day, mentally and physically alive.
3. Start exercising.  Even if it is just for a few minutes get out and start a regular program of exercise.  Find someone who can exercise with you if exercising alone isn’t your thing.   Moving is important for mental and physical capacity.   Life is stressful as it is and exercising is just one way to lower the stress.
4. Eat the right foods.   So many of the problems people face today are lifestyle choices.   Diabetes is a lifestyle choice for the most part.   People can either choose to eat low cost high calorie diets or they can choose to eat foods that are healthy. 
5. Create a plan for your life.   Mediocrity stems from drifting through each day.   There may be a goal but in most cases it is just getting through today and then doing it over again.  It is no wonder that people are “checking out” and finding TV as a way to get away.   Create a plan and start working on those goals.   Start with a 5 year plan and define what it is and where you want to be in five years.
6. Improve you.   Spend the time and energy to improve who you are and the skills you need to be successful in the world today.   The “old” world, the old way, are gone.   It takes new skills, new abilities and new ways of thinking to compete in today’s global economy.  Become an expert.  Sometimes it takes digging deep into who you are to find out what it is that really makes you come alive.  Find out what it is and then start moving forward.
7. Read.   Reading is an easy, inexpensive way to improve your personal results.    Start reading the kind of things that improve your value to yourself and others.

8. Get help.  Work with someone to push you towards higher levels of performance.  Doing it by yourself isn’t working is it?   Getting more out of life in this fast paced world isn’t going to happen if you have to do it alone.  Maybe a few people are able to push through the briars and thorns but most people aren’t able to move in the direction they want alone.

9.  Make the time.   So many people say, “I don’t have the time to ….” and it’s true.   There is less and less time for “you” because of all the distractions that you can sign up for.   It takes time to go to the gym, it takes time to prepare meals, it takes time to get ready for work, it takes time to do the household chores, it takes time for everything but “YOU” and “YOU” are important aren’t you?   Make the time to take the time for you.   If it is one day a week, take that time to focus on bettering you.

10.  It costs too much.   It costs too much to be mediocre?  Improving yourself, either with coaching, attending programs, and working on being excellent will improve your life.  It takes time and it might cost money.   If you can pay for cable TV, if you can pay for “extras”,  if you can pay for things you don’t “need”, then it isn’t about the costs.  It is about the priorities  you are making for yourself.

In 5 years where do you want to be?   Do you want to be living a life of mediocrity?   Make a choice and start living beyond mediocrity today.

What would you do if?

Many people wait and wonder what life would have been like if they chose a different course of action or if they hadn’t waited.   Often people wait because they don’t have all the conditions just right to make the leap into the future they really desire.

As it turns out there for most people there is no “exact” right moment.  Once there is courage and conviction to change an impulse of movement takes place that initiates a transformational change.   If it is worth it, the risk is worth it as well.   Many famous people have stepped out onto the platform of change and decided that living their dreams was worth the price.   For some people the price of realizing their dream is worth all that they have, their security, their finances, and their reputation.   To have tried is more important than worrying about “what if” it didn’t work.

Maybe you aren’t ready to make such a large leap.  You would however like to make changes in  your life, small ones perhaps, changes that will improve your outlook on life and drive you towards your desired outcomes.

What I think I become …

Values, beliefs and experiences drive our thoughts.   What we think about we become.  Our thoughts are transformed into emotional energy, fear, worry, doubt, anxiety, or happiness, peace, joy, confidence, self-assurance, and contentment which ultimately shapes how we live our lives.  Most people experience far more negative information in their lives than positive.   The messages that are received from others begin to transform our beliefs about ourselves over time.   Messages that we receive as children enter our mind in the formative years and become a strong part of our story.   It is not that the story is true, it is that we believe that the story is true for us and we start living in that story rather than the story of our own making.   In other words for some reason we focus on the impacts of negative thoughts more so than positive thoughts.  It is as if we are taught to believe negative thought as being true and positive thought as wishful thinking.   Martin Seligman writes “Frequent and intense negative thoughts about the past are the raw material that blocks the emotions of contentment and satisfaction, and these thoughts make serenity and peace impossible.”

What can one do in order to shift the thoughts that drive emotions so that there is more positive thinking being done?  

  1. Focus on positive events in life and  opportunities to be grateful.
  2. Forgive the people in the past that may have strongly influenced the negative thought patterns.

Positive emotions lead to better health, both physical and mentally according to research done by Sarah Pressman.  

Positive thinking leads to positive emotions which increases the overall satisfaction with life.   Who wouldn’t want more of that?

What can you do when a negative feeling or thought comes screeching at you?

  1. Take a deep breath.  Acknowledge the emotion (“I feel …. “)
  2. Shift the energy of that emotion.   (This is mental Aikido …) and gently push the emotion to a different place.  
  3. Replace the thought with something better,  a favorite vacation, sunset, something admirable, peaceful, enjoyable and inner smile event.
  4. Take another deep breath.

Read the words of David Whyte and see what message is trying to convey.   We are often trapped, bombarded by information, and most of it is negative information, sensationalized news, stories that are all designed to pull us into believing everything in the world is negative.   Negative information sells and is profitable but it is not the world of truth, it is only a speck of truth in the total amount of information that is available.   Sometimes it is the negative news that provides momentary relief from personal suffering that people seek.  However a constant bath of negative information soon becomes the truth about the world and about the self and it takes more depressing negative news to feel just a tiny bit better.   

Surround yourself with positive news, positive thoughts and positive people and you’ll start feeling better about whom you are, and what you can accomplish.  It turns out that the more positive things you bring into your life the better your life becomes.

set the intention

What dreams are sitting unattended to right now?

What five things do you want to accomplish, “big hairy audacious goals”, in your life?

Write those down.   The next thing to do is to announce those goals to others, make it big and tell everyone you top five goals for your life.   Start to breathe those goals.  Start to taste those goals.  Start to hear those goals.   Start to see those goals.  

The big goals will then need to be broken down into smaller goals, yearly goals, monthly goals and weekly goals.  The plan is to achieve the big goal but first the goals need to be more manageable and attainable.

Use the very big goals as a means of setting your intention, which is like setting your compass.  You know you want to head north and along the way you know there are going to be things you have to do.  You are going to have to cross mountains, rivers, and you’ll have to face your own lions, tigers and bears.

It will take time and effort to realize the dream, so set the intention today so that the dream can take shape tomorrow.

Your dreams, where did they come from?   Where are your dreams taking you?

Think back to a time that you were the happiest, what did that look like?   What did it sound like?   What did it feel like?   What did it taste like?   Can you remember that time when you felt the most alive, the most vibrant, the most in touch with all of who you are?

Wasn’t that an exciting moment?   Wasn’t that powerful?   What was that experience that brings to life so much life and joy and potential?

What would it be like to live that experience all over again?   What would it be like to live each day with the potential of experiencing life as full as it was once before?

It is possible to live life with greater joy right now.

When we arrive at this time of year there are many people who focus on the concept of peace.  Peace in the world and peace within themselves.   It is a season to look for peace, create peace and experience peace.   When we meet with our families, relatives and friends we should remember that we are responsible for bringing peace to others.

To bring peace to others means to be at peace with ourselves.
