stepping forward or backward

“Every day you may make progress. Every step may be fruitful. Yet there will stretch out before you an ever-lengthening, ever-ascending, ever-improving path. You know you will never get to the end of the journey. But this, so far from discouraging, only adds to the joy and glory of the climb.”
― Winston S. Churchill

Two steps forward?

Are your steps taking you in the direction you desire most?

Are you moving forward?

Ask yourself those questions and write down your answers.   Don’t let the questions just reside in your mind for a moment take some time and contemplate the answer.   A superficial glance at the questions and moving on or moving quickly to something else won’t bring you closer to your dreams.

Pause.  Stop and really examine where your steps are leading you.  Where are you really going?   When will you get there?  What obstacles are in the way?

If you’re like a lot of people pausing isn’t something that feels like progress.  Pausing may feel like going backwards.  That is only if you compare yourself to everyone else who is just going in some direction hoping to get somewhere.  Most people don’t even know why they are doing what they are doing.   It might just be that someone told them to do something and then they’ll find the answer they’re looking for.  Maybe they won’t find anything but they will be busy.   Are you one of those busy people?  Pause.  Think about what you are doing and why you are doing it.  Take a deep breath and exhale.  Think about where you are going?

Are you moving along the right path?   Are  you struggling to move forward?   Are you stuck in the sand?   Are you sliding backwards?

What are your answers?

author of destiny

“Around here, however, we don’t look backwards for very long. We keep moving forward, opening up new doors and doing new things, because we’re curious… and curiosity keeps leading us down new paths.” — Walt Disney

Consider for a moment your past, the past you have lived for the last number of years, what did it look like?   Your past brought you to this moment right now in some shape or fashion.    You were curious, you were seeking, you were looking or you stumbled to this point.   No matter how you got here you arrived.    Your past is over, your next thoughts, your next actions, your next desires are going to take you from the present to the future.    The small steps, the small ideas, the small actions you take today will start to shape your future.

While the past may have played an important part in getting you here, what will play an important part of getting you there, to your new destination?    What new thoughts ,new actions will you have to take to start creating a better future for yourself?   What will you need to start doing?  What will you need to stop doing?    What will you need to learn and what will you need to unlearn?

Your future, you are the author of your tomorrow.

For some people the past is the author of their future.   Some people are so stuck in the old stories and beliefs that they can’t see another way forward.    What story are you listening to?

The past certainly has shaped the “who” you are for today.    With effort, with time, with desire and with persistence a new “who” will be created.

Career path not working for you, then what steps do you need to take?

Relationships are on the rocks, what new steps do you need to take?

Life flowing in the wrong direction, what new steps will you take today?

you must go forward

“Playing safe is probably the most unsafe thing in the world. You cannot stand still. You must go forward.”    Robert Collier

When was the last time you read something positive or heard something positive in the news media?   Most of the time news is about tragedy, the economy going down, jobs becoming more scarce, drugs, homicides, stress, school performance declining, and worse.  That is what you hear every day, bad things, and eventually that is what you believe as well.  It is easy to get conditioned to believe that everything is going wrong and it is even easier to forget what has gone right.

What happens when people begin to believe everything is going wrong?   They step back and they retreat from the world so that they can feel some sense of safety.

When people retreat to a safe place they are intentionally retreating from opportunity.   The time to be bold, new and different is when everything appears to be falling apart.   The time to make your move is when everyone else has stopped moving.   This is the time for leaders to emerge; this is the time for influencing others and making a difference.

The great financial wisdom of buy low sell high is applicable right now in terms of making personal change.  This point in time, this point in history is the “low” and this is the time for bold people to act.   If your career is going in the wrong direction, make a move, make a change and make that change soon, get prepared to do something different, something new, and something exciting.   If your relationships aren’t on track, make a change and get help to improve the relationship.

This is the right time to make those changes you have always wanted to make.  It is time to make the move, the move that you have already said you wanted to make, make it today.   Don’t put off another day making the change that will improve your life.  What is holding you back from doing what you have said you wanted to do?

Cogs in a machine … are you one of them?

The secrets to success have been well known for  years, and yet people shrink back from the opportunity for success for something else, mediocrity.  People live in work where replication is there day.   People live by habit, by doing the same things over and over again and eventually they become a cog in an infinite machine.   When the cog gets worn out it is replaced by a new shiny cog, but a cog none the less.

The world is filled with cog like things, fast food, where you can get identically shaped and prepared meals.   They look the same, they smell the same, because it is all the same.   The workers in a fast food restaurant need no special skills, they are just cogs in a machine.

Of course there are processes that need to be followed so that the outcomes of the process are consistent.   A car coming out of a production line missing various components would hardly be what anyone would want.

Think about your day.  Think about your habits, what do you do exactly the same day after day?  How is that helping you?   Are you moving forward in life or are you just becoming a cog?
