take the tension out

“Relaxing the shoulders is vital for relaxation in general. However, owing to the effects of gravity, relaxation is problematic unless we let the shoulders remain in their natural place. Let the shoulders drop, or settle in harmony with gravity, into their most comfortable position. It isn’t too difficult to do this for a moment, but to sustain this condition unconsciously in our lives is another matter. We raise our shoulders unnaturally when we lean on a desk or hold the telephone between our shoulders and ears, when we are shocked by a loud noise, and who knows how many other times throughout the day. And the unsettling of the shoulders doesn’t have to be large to produce anxiety, stiff necks, and headaches. Just slightly raising them will create tension, and this tension throws the nervous system out of balance.

When do we raise the shoulders in daily life? What are we feeling at that moment and leading up to that moment? Remembering that the body reflects the mind, and that the raising of the shoulders not only creates tension but also is a physical manifestation of psychological tension itself, what are the roots of this tension? Bringing the mind into the moment, let’s observe ourselves in a state free of preconceived ideas or beliefs. Don’t guess at these questions. Observe yourself in relationship to others and the universe”

How much stress are you experiencing right now?

How would you feel if you could just let the stress go?

Many people are living stress filled lives.  The stress creates tension and tension creates inflammation.  The nerves are triggered and pain follows.  The immune system starts to weaken and the body’s response is more pain and discomfort.

How much stress is in your life?   Work, appointments, traffic, relationships, finances, fitness, …   What isn’t going the way you want in your life?

What are yo doing about the stress?   Are you taking time out to relax and release the tension?   Are you being kind to yourself?   Are you taking care of your mind and your body?    Are you creating a period of time to just let go of the tension?

Relieving stress and tension requires that you create zones of time in your day to step away from the stress and tension.   Take 5 minutes each hour and go for a short walk.   Do some deep breathing – slow inhales and slow exhales.  Do that for 3 or 4 minutes each hour (while you are walking around).  Your body and mind need tension free zones of time to recover from the stresses of life.   Take care of yourself and your body will take care of you.   Will you do that?

Life style

“Relaxation is… a state between waking and sleeping, where the body is completely still and the mind is allowed to flow freely from one thought to another, or alternately, a state in which the mind becomes inadvertently calm.”

When was the last time you took a sustained break from your daily routines? When did you take time to relax and step back from the normal pattern of life?

With employee engagement hovering around 37% companies are losing a majority of their productivity to time wasting events. People are stressed and stress doesn’t necessarily improve output. Vacations are being taken by fewer people as the feeling is that vacations only serve to increase the amount of stress in their lives rather than reducing stress.

What are you doing to restore engagement in work and life?

What is your level of stress? How are you dealing with it?

Stress reduction can begin with:
1. Breathing and relaxation
2. Practicing gratitude – journaling what you are grateful for.
3. Being mindful – paying attention to the day and not letting it just go by.
4. Disconnecting from TV, computer and electronic devices.
5. Taking a real vacation.

Stress is often related to a lifestyle that is demanding more from you than you can provide.  Sustained stress leads to burnout and less satisfaction with life.  Choose to change your lifestyle so that you can experience greater happiness.

be mindful

“Promise Yourself

To be so strong that nothing
can disturb your peace of mind.
To talk health, happiness, and prosperity
to every person you meet.

To make all your friends feel
that there is something in them
To look at the sunny side of everything
and make your optimism come true.

To think only the best, to work only for the best,
and to expect only the best.
To be just as enthusiastic about the success of others
as you are about your own.

To forget the mistakes of the past
and press on to the greater achievements of the future.
To wear a cheerful countenance at all times
and give every living creature you meet a smile.

To give so much time to the improvement of yourself
that you have no time to criticize others.
To be too large for worry, too noble for anger, too strong for fear,
and too happy to permit the presence of trouble.

To think well of yourself and to proclaim this fact to the world,
not in loud words but great deeds.
To live in faith that the whole world is on your side
so long as you are true to the best that is in you.”

Practice relaxing your mind so that you can be present to the world around you.

In the busyness of life it is easy to get caught in the maelstrom of noise that surrounds you.  Take time to step away from the noise and relax your mind.

Mindfulness or meditation can take just a few minutes of time each day.  As little as five minutes of meditation can restore energy, clear up negative thinking and improve decision-making.   When life is just too busy, stop, and take a break, your mind will appreciate creating a quiet space for you.

You can find out how to meditate here.

Stop for a moment

“Know what you want to do, hold the thought firmly, and do every day what should be done, and every sunset will see you that much nearer the goal.”  Elbert Hubbard

Some days you just have to sit back and stare into the sky.     Take notice of the beauty that surrounds you when the day has not been the day you wish to live over.   Take a look and wonder, wonder at the beauty, the peace, the tranquility of the sky.   The painting that shifts moment to moment and where the brillance of color grows as the sun disappears over the horizon.   Stop and take a look.

seasons

Seasons of the year tend to be what most people think about when they think of, spring, summer, autumn, and winter, and those are the seasons. We also have seasons in our life, discovery, accomplishment, significance, and sharing. We can have seasons in a single day, awakening, work, relaxation and sleep.

We are now in the autumn season with respect to how the earth precesses around sun. In life autumn is the season where many reflect on years of work, perhaps in a career only to realize that all that work wasn’t so meaningful. Maybe there is a feeling of restlessness which fuels a desire to do something meaningful during the next few years. Is there a gap in your life where you may be feeling like all life has been is work and without significance? What would make your life significant?
